More Than Numbers and Budgets

For Steve Doherty, serving Newmarket Community Church has never been about recognition. Whether he's helping oversee the church's finances, moving boxes for the Thrift Shop, or responding to an unexpected issue with the building, Steve has always been willing to lend a hand.

As Chair of the Treasurer's Board, Steve helps oversee the financial and physical resources that keep the church's ministries running. The board works with the Treasurer to develop the annual budget, partners with the Stewardship Committee, oversees church property, approves major spending, and helps ensure every ministry has the support it needs. They're also the ones responding when the unexpected happens—from heating problems to stuck doors.

Steve's connection to Newmarket Community Church began through his wife's family, who have been part of both the church and the Newmarket community for generations. What started as occasional visits eventually became the place where he and his wife were married and later raised their children.

His leadership journey began with a simple invitation to join the Treasurer's Board. When the opportunity arose to serve as Chair, he stepped forward as another way to give back.

"The church has helped me through some difficult times in my life," Steve shared. "This is a way to contribute to that church community."

Beyond his leadership role, Steve is known for helping wherever he's needed. Around Christmas, he and his son help move boxes for the Thrift Shop's Christmas Shop, and over the years he's delivered air conditioners to those in need and tackled countless behind-the-scenes projects.

For anyone thinking about volunteering, Steve offers simple advice:

"Look for something that interests you. There are a variety of ways to help—some very visible and some less so. You're bound to find opportunities that align with your interests and comfort level."

For Steve, the greatest reward is knowing that his service helps ensure Newmarket Community Church continues to serve others for generations to come.
