Answering the Call to Serve

If you've attended worship at Newmarket Community Church, chances are you've been greeted by Doug Wright's warm smile. Whether he's welcoming people at the door, serving as a liturgist, helping count the weekly offering, supporting the Missions Board, or quietly making sure the sanctuary is stocked with prayer cards and other essentials, Doug can often be found lending a helping hand wherever it is needed.

Doug has been attending NCC for five years and became a member after spending several years getting to know the congregation. His journey to the church began through a friendship with Pastor Patty, who invited him to attend a service.

"I loved the community feel of the church," Doug recalls. "I knew many of the members already from my past experience with the library, so there was an immediate sense of community."

That sense of community is what continues to inspire Doug's involvement today. Over the years, he has found himself saying "yes" whenever opportunities to serve arose. He joined the Welcome Team because he felt it was a natural fit, later became involved with the Missions Board, and eventually joined the Counting Team after several members encouraged him to do so.

For Doug, service is less about the specific role and more about the people it impacts.

"When the people around me are happy, it really fills my cup," he says. "It just feels natural to be of service to others, and I can't think of a better place to do it."

One of Doug's favorite parts of serving is being one of the first people church members and visitors see on Sunday mornings.

"I love greeting people and seeing all of the wonderful smiles," he shares. "Knowing they are being greeted with kindness is such an honor and a privilege."

Although he is still relatively new to the Missions Board, Doug has enjoyed collaborating with fellow church members and community partners on projects that extend NCC's reach beyond its walls. More recently, he has also stepped into the role of liturgist, embracing yet another opportunity to serve.

When asked what he loves most about Newmarket Community Church, Doug doesn't hesitate.

"The people," he says. "The sense of community and connection."

His advice for anyone considering becoming more involved is simple: jump in.

"It really is a lovely experience," Doug says. "It's a privilege to collaborate with other church members and make a difference."
